Historical Information
The proposed Battlefield Memorial Gateway veterans park will honor our historical military heritage. Clinton County, and surrounding areas, have a rich military history that can be traced back to the American Revolution. The history is equally rich during the War of 1812 and continued through the World Wars and the establishment of a Strategic Air Command base.
The American Legion itself has roots in the Clinton County area. Some of the founding members of the American Legion underwent training at the base in Plattsburgh prior to World War I.
